As globalization has emerged, you might want to know what are the western events that are influenced in Cambodia. This country is known as the well-preserved tradition in Southeast Asia. However, new culture still influence as the world is getting closed to each other. There are some foreign cultures that Cambodia accepts and celebrates annually to make things even more fun and enjoyable. There are four main events that are influenced by Western culture and celebrate in Cambodia every year such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, Halloween, and Christmas. These events are fun, joyful, and interesting which is popular mostly among teenagers and adults.
Valentine’s Day is one of the events that has been celebrating in Cambodia for so many years already. On 14th of February each year, people exchange postcards, chocolate, or flowers to each other for expressing their affection. Mostly, couples give flowers or chocolate to each other on Valentine’s Day to show how much they love each other. People also hang out or eat out at the restaurant under the candle light on this day as well. These acts are the way to express their feelings toward one another. Besides couples, a family also express their affection on this day as well. The children might buy a small gift for their parents or have a family hang out to make their relationship and family bond to become even tighter. Valentine’s Day at least help children to simply give something to their parents on a popular event to express their love to their parents easily.
Mother’s Day / Father’s Day
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are also the popular events that influence to Cambodia as well. On each event, sons and daughters give gifts and wishes to their parents in a various way. Some were invited to a family trip or family meal, while the others were brought cakes and gifts. Moreover, there are countless trend statuses and posts of wishes from teenagers and adults to their parents on Facebook, Instagram, and other social medias. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is considered as a very special event to express love from children to their parents.
Halloween allows teens to happily dress up and take photos or hang out enjoyably in the mall with their friends. On Halloween, which celebrates on 31st of October, malls, and shops in the supermarket decorates their places with pumpkins, spider web, and other things nicely. Also, some shops also have the promotion on this day as well. Personally, I won a free pizza for dressing up as a vampire witch on Halloween which was absolutely a great day! I scared some kids, honestly, but at the end of the day, it was a great experience. Halloween has been just celebrating for these last few years in Cambodia. However, it becomes quite popular as it is a fun and enjoyable event for teens and young adults.
Who doesn’t know Christmas? Christmas is a very popular event that celebrates in so many countries around the world including Cambodia. Each year, on 25th of December, we can see a lot of places has a Christmas tree in front of their shops. Christmas tree is always put on the school campus while students get a day off and enjoy this day. For kindergarten, the school has a dressed up Santa Claus to their school and gives students sweets along with games and other fun events as well. As Christmas is almost on the end of the year, many shops are on sale which also plays a part in making this day special to people.
These four events are considered as the most popular events that influenced from Western culture to Cambodia. To cut things short, Cambodian accept what is interesting and positive yet never forget what the ancestors has left for them.
